The Goodnight Scrub The area in which we live and work is the wonderful Goodnight Scrub. We are on the edge of the scrub along the Perry River. Goodnight Scrub is a protected area with its magnificent and unexpected dense growth of Bottle trees and Hoop Pines. We have often joked that when God was out doing his gardening he dropped two seed packets here and hence the thick growth of these two species. Of course the old timers have a different story....

...back in the days when cattle when men on horseback would drove the cattle to market on horseback this area was on the stock route. the wisdom then was that if the cattle were to get away into the thick scrub then you could "kiss them goodnight". Although the cattle might be able to enter the scrub there was no way that a man and horse could follow. A charming name, a charming story, a charming area. Well worth the drive if you are passing by on the Bruce Highway between Childers and Gin Gin and happen to see the sign that points to the Goodnight Scrub. While you are there take a look at the Kaliwa Hut which has still got its original boards from many years ago when it was a settlers hut. |
